Sailing in San Fran

On Sunday we did the coolest thing...we sailed the San Francisco Bay!!!

The Presidio Yacht Club is attached to Travis AFB so we got an awesome deal on a 6 hour sailing trip complete with a skipper and all!

I'll have to admit my only knowledge of sailing was seeing it in the movies and I imagined we would sit on the boat, drink wine, eat cheese, and enjoy the awesome scenery...little did I know how much work sailing was!

We did make all the boys do the work but we had our own challenge of staying warm! There is a saying "The coldest winter is a summer in San Francisco" and it is so true! Here it was the beginning of August and we were drinking hot chocolate on a sailboat...how ironic!

Sailing is a popular activity in the San Francisco bay and we saw several races as well as tons of other sailboats and canoes...

View of the city skyline...

The boys working...tacking, hoisting, and other terms I can't remember!

The fog was heavy in the morning and we started out by sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge...

This was our skipper...he was a lot of fun and he brought his 10 year old son with him and he was a cook kid!

Staying warm and drinking hot chocolate!

After going under the Golden Gate we headed to Angel Island for a picnic lunch...
It was so beautiful...the sun had come up and the fog had cleared...we ate our lunch and headed back out to do some more sailing!
As we sailed after lunch the weather was warmer but the wind was more ferocious and the guys really had to work hard!

The entire ride back we encountered lots of extremely cold spray and the boat was slanted sideways the entire time battling the winds...normal for sailing but for us novices we were comparing our experience to that of a Deadliest Catch episode...haha!

Here's Paul underneath being tossed and turned!

We are all bundled up in Jason's gortex to stay warm and dry...it was crazy, slightly scary, but SO much fun!

After sailing we headed to Sausalito for a nice dinner before we headed home to relieve the several crews of friends that had so kindly offered to watch Cooper and Riley ALL day while we were out having fun!

Cooper and Riley had fun too and apparently they behaved pretty well for all of the babysitters...thanks you guys!!!

Looks like a fun time! Those were some serious whitecaps on that one picture.
